The Strangers into Citizens Campaign join Spectrum Radio to mark the United Nations backed International Migrants Day 2008.

The Day marks the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the 1990 ‘International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Their Families’. While the Convention has been ratified by 39 states and signed by a further 15, the UK Government is neither a signatory and hasn’t ratified the convention.

Welcoming the Day, the Strangers into Citizens Coordinator, Hratche Koundarjian said:

“London should be getting behind International Migrants Day on December the 18th. Migrants have a long and very proud history in the UK, and the Citizens Organising Foundation welcomes the contribution that migrants are making today to London’s economy and our society and communities. The Strangers into Citizens campaign, is calling for an earned amnesty for long term undocumented migrants who have been living in the UK, and this campaign deserves particular attention on International Migrants Day”.

The Strangers into Citizens campaign has recently secured some high profile supports, including the new Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. While at the same time, senior politicians from across the parties are also beginning to signal their support.

Hratche Koundarjian continued:

“Everyone who isn’t playing politics with the migration debate knows that the Government can neither deport up to a million people from the UK, and that keeping the status quo for undocumented migrants is hurting the economy and putting already vulnerable communities under even more pressure. The time is right for a proper, legitimate and sensible debate on what kind of pathway to citizenship we want to see in the UK.

Joy Lam, who is a volunteer for the campaign came on the show to talk about their plans. The campaign is organising a rally at Trafalgar Square on May 4th 2009 and is launching a Slogan Competition for the event. If you have any suggestion for the slogan, please send it to dj@558.net. The winning slogan will be featured on the posters as well as being showcased at the rally.
