CY (Chinese Youth) Radio celebrated the first anniversary of its programme with the advent of its second On Air Generation training scheme for 18-25’s this Autumn.
The turnout was a success, with many young prospective DJs arriving to participate in the movement, which offers training such as editing, packaging and presenting directly by insiders of the radio broadcasting industry. Forthcoming reporters, fresh presenters and future stars of the airwaves joined forces in producing a full hour of live programme to mark the occasion,
The scheme was supported by Spectrum Radio, the only daily Chinese radio station in England. DJ Alice and Joseph Wu, the programme manager of Spectrum, discussed the ins and outs of the radio business, and gave a brief prefatory on its history.
The day was fun-packed with an innovative ice-breaking introduction. The young DJs were then apportioned into groups representing different broadcasting genres, such as mainstream giants Kiss and Capital, the public-funded BBC Radio, an internet radio and a community radio.
The groups were encouraged to think about the main sources of funding, target audience market and research area for each to demonstrate the differences involved in running each category.
Victuals such as mooncake and char siu were provided, and the new team started off with a bang by receiving their first taste of participating in a live studio broadcast.
Groups decided amongst themselves on the topics to present. The young DJs each gave a quick introduction to the listening audience before delivering their slots. Food, favourite TV shows and actresses and actors as well as Olympics were discussed with great enthusiasm and much laughter.
The live show finaled with over 40 young DJs delivering a hearty birthday singsong and celebrations of photos and cake.
CY Radio is broadcasting on Spectrum Radio 558AM every weekend until the end of November 2008. It is also available online at www.558.net
