Chinese Youth and Traditional Heritage

What does "Made in China" mean to you?
At least 64 people were killed and dozens injured when a bridge collapsed while under construction in China's Hunan province. There were 123 workers on the bridge removing scaffolding at the time of the accident. In a report last year, China identified 6,300 bridges across the country that were dangerous and pledged to fix or rebuild all the damaged bridges in an ambitious plan to make the country's road network safer by 2010. What was the main cause of the collapse? At the same time, US toymaker Mattel recalled more than 18 million toys produced in China after finding that the paint used may contain lead. How would news like this affect the overall image of Chinese-made products? What does the label of "Made in China" mean to you?

Free C-Charge for Small Cars
Smaller cars will be allowed into the congestion zone of London free of charge under the new plans of Mayor Ken Livingstone. The C-charge will waived for low CO2 emitting makes such as the Ford Fiesta, Fiat Panda, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa, while the worst offenders, will have the daily fee increased from £8 to £25 from October. If approved, the new plan could start in February before Chinese New Year. Have the C-Charge affected your business? Do you think the new plan is fair? Would you switch to a lower emission makes?

Tickets Let Down
It is concert fever in Hong Kong with top acts such as Lisa Wong, Jackie Cheung and Eason Chan all announced majors dates. Mrs Eason Chan claimed she often booked tickets for her friends but were badly let down when they don't pay up. Have you any similar experience? What price do you put for friendship?

Chinese Youth and Traditional Heritage
Today is the Seventh Day of the Seventh Month in Chinese Calendar, the day for Chinese Valentine. In Beijing, over 1400 single ladies celebrate with a match-making party, yet, the day hold little meaning for most overseas Chinese. Do you think there are sufficient provisions for the younger generation to learn about their traditions and culture? Any good suggestions from our younger audiences? What would get you excited to learn about your heritage?

  1. big ben:

Great programme. Please play Eason Chan song. I hope to catch him in concert when I visit Hong Kong in Oct. Thanks

  2. Eastend Girl:

It is a crazy plan. Everyone will start getting a smaller car to avoid the charge. Central London will be congested again. It is unfair to poor people who can't buy the extra car as well.

  8. Alan Whisky:

What a great idea! Always get me to do something when I hear the word FREE. This mayor knows how to make headline. Whether it will be good for the greenhouse gas, I am not sure :)

  9. Kate Man:

Hi I will be interest to learn Chinese art and culture. I attended some class in Hong Kong last summer and really enjoy it. The problem for us is we don't want to attend Chinese school because we have already far too much workload at our school. If these classes are one off or for the holiday then I would like to join and make some friends too.

  11. Asprin:

I feel sad when I read there are yet more man-make disasters in China. I hope it is not because of someone making profit but cutting corners. The new leadership said and seems to be doing all the right thing, but their policy still does not filter down. How many more lifes will we lost before everyone wake up to the fact that corruption and mismanagement can KILL!!!

  12. David Ho:

I will get a new car to take advantage of the Free C-Charge. Chinatown did suffer partly because of the C-Charge but it is natural for people to use local facilities more as they become more intergrated. It is goiod news we now have new immigrants from China, they seems to fill up all the restaurant quite well.

  14. Linda:

We need to organise more events for the kids so they can learn about their culture. When I grew up I was often embarassed about being Chinese. At the time, the only thing Chinese on TV is the Monkey and they talk really bad English. We need positive role models and lot of fun stuff for the kids to enjoy being Chinese

  15. Judy Pang:

I always try to support my own country by buying China and Britain. But I sometimes worry the quality. The new toy scare is very worrying. Before, when I hear on the news about the false products in China, I always think it is just the media, but the toy recall is international. I am in Hong Kong right now, everything Made in China is cheaper and look just as good. It is very tempting to buy them. But now I will think very carefully

  16. Kam:

You get what you paid for. If things are too cheap they have to cut some corners. I am very patriotic, but when I am buying something that is health related, I will look for alternative from "Made in China"

  17. summer:

Congestion Charge is an unfair tax. What exactly do we get for our money? The road is not any better? It is hard for business to get a smaller car. Have you try to fix your weekly stock in one of those small Panda? It does not work. We need a big car for a reason, not to show off as someone suggested!!!!

  18. Leo Leung:

Give credit when it is due. I used to be one of the polluter until the Mayor start charging. Since then I have switch to public transport or consider local option rather than going straight to central London. The new plan might mean a few more cars in London, but as these people switch to smaller cars, the overall emmission will be lower. I never understand why people need to drive those big trucks in London. They are for farms and adventure. Most of the time they are empty except for the lone driver. :?

  19. George Lam:

Sadly there are very little choice from buying products other than those "made in China" I do love my country and want to support it, but often the products let me down!!

  20. Baz:

Everything has a cost. Ultra cheap goods often cost the environment more, often carries a higher costs in health and safety to the workers, and higher indirect costs to the consumer such as impact on their health & safety. "Profit comes first" is the other side of the same coin of "Progress comes first", which is systemic in China. Costs on human lives, on the environment and blantantly ignoring any potential ill effect on everybody else is a big problem in China. Once China has included all the costs to H&S, environment, welfare, etc, I doubt if China will remain cheap enough to be the world's factory.

  21. Lucy Fong:

I think it is not fair to blame all Chinese products when there are one or two headlines. I think "made in China" really does mean high quality at low price. The products often have more functions and better design style. "Made in Britain" might be more reliable but the designs are usually very boring and stuffy!!

  22. FOD:

I couldn't understand some parts of this article, but it sounds interesting
