Spectrum Radio celebrates its 17th Anniversary on the June 25th 2007 with the launching of a brand new project, the Spectrum Chinese Community Network倫敦國際廣播電台華人社區網絡 (SCCN).
As the only daily Cantonese radio show in the UK, we aim to provide increase access for the Chinese community to the airwave, giving them an even stronger voice on our radio as well as through our internet network.
We will launch a series of workshops and seminars to train up new presenters, producers, technical team members and volunteers, so that the Network will be truly produced by the community, for the community, to the community and beyond.
The Network will encourage members of the community to lead on new ideas for programmes so that our service will reflect even closer to their needs. They will be able to submit news and reports on the Network and participate actively on the various themed programmes broadcasted on our website 558.net as well as featured on our AM output.
1. Community Report (城市小報告)
Spectrum Radio has a long tradition on supporting the many community events organised by charities, clansmen associations, arts Groups, community centres, Chinese language schools etc. Community Report has been a long running segment on our programme. With the launch of the Network, this will become a regular focus of Community News and Events, with extensive input directly from members of the community.
2. Radio Drama (英倫生活故事)
One of the main challenges for our multi-cultural society is for people from different backgrounds, values, religions, languages, traditions and political upbringings to live together with better understanding and greater tolerance. Drama and Storytelling is one of the most powerful and effective tool for engaging a mass audience and introducing ideas and concepts from different perspectives.
The Network plans to produce a series of radio drama about the Chinese Community in the UK using real life case studies. We believe this light entertainment format will be one of the most cost effective way to appeal to all ages and will bring the entire family together, creating a focal point of interaction and discussion about the wide-ranging issues of being Chinese and living in the UK.
3. Radio Forum (城市擂台)
The Radio Forum aims to encourage a more active participation among the Chinese in civic affairs and to raise awareness among the general public on issues which concern the Chinese community in the UK. The English-based discussion forum programme will feature councilors, ministers, MPs and other figures of authority speaking about a specific topic. There will also be opportunities for listeners to put questions to the panel.
The Network hopes to produce additional features with regular editorial reports in between each forum to maximise interest and awareness.
4. UK Life Q&A (完全英國生活手冊)
The Programme aims to encourage active engagement of the Chinese community in the society by equipping the community with accurate information about every aspect of living in the UK. The prevalence of apathy on mainstream matters among many people is partly due to a lack of knowledge and understanding on these issues.
With the support of an online Q&A forum, the Chinese community will be able to ask questions and have them answered by a qualified expert on matters including health, education, immigration and legal matters etc.
The Network hopes to provide an easy and reliable point of reference for the Chinese community and create talking points on various important issues.
5. China Now Update
Spectrum Chinese Community Network is proud to be a part of CHINA NOW, a nation-wide festival which will run from the 2008 Chinese New Year to the Beijing Olympic Games. The Network will produce regular podcasts and updates on the wide-ranging events which cover the fields of art, design and culture, education, technology, business, lifestyle and sports, from China, as well as from the Chinese community in the UK. This will be an integral part of Spectrum’s Beijing Olympics coverage in 2008.
